  Job Title         ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL -  Pre-K through Grade 6

 

Title of Immediate Supervisor:   Superintendent of Schools.

  Job Summary:    The elementary school principal shall be the executive head and educational leader of the elementary school, and, therefore, shall handle all matters which concern the elementary school.  S/he shall be responsible for administering and supervising the operation and work of the elementary school in all of its phases.  Activities and problems relating to teachers, students, educational programs, supplies and equipment, etc., which affect the elementary school shall be the principal's sphere of activity.  S/he shall give assistance to teachers and all other personnel in matters relating to any phase of professional or school work.  In general, the elementary school principal shall be concerned with the improvement of instruction.

 

 Job Goal:   To use leadership, supervisory, administrative and professional skills to manage the elementary school so as to promote the educational development of each student.

The elementary school principal shall:

 

  1. Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school.
  2. Within established guides, program classes to meet student needs.
  3. Establish guides for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline.
  4. Supervise the school's instruction process.
  5. Plan, organize and direct the implementation of all school activities.
  6. Initiate, design and implement programs to meet the specific needs of the school.
  7. Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to:
  1. Orient newly-assigned staff members and assist in their development.
  2. Evaluate and counsel all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
  3. Conduct staff meetings to keep staff informed of policy changes, new programs and educational trends.
  1. Assume responsibility for job descriptions for:
  1. Assist the food services director and maintenance personnel in the coordination and supervision of food service and maintenance support services and personnel.  Coordinate and supervise library services and personnel.  
  2. Implement and supervise federal programs (e.g. Title I) as directed by the Superintendent.       
  3. Prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records and all other paper work required or appropriate to the school's administration.
  4. Participate in principals' meetings and such other meetings as required.
  5. Prepare and submit school's budget requests and monitor the expenditure of funds.
  6. Attend special events held to recognize student achievement, school-sponsored athletic activities and functions for grades pre-k through 12th grade.
  1. Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
  2. Keep the Superintendent informed of school activities.
  3. Keep abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending meetings, visiting schools and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field. 
  1. Suspend a student whenever in his/her best judgment when the best interests of the district demand such action. Such suspensions shall be in accordance with state law and communicated in writing to the Superintendent.  
  1. Be responsible for the review and advancement of the curriculum. In this regard, the elementary school principal shall:

   23.  Oversee and Lead the Early Childhood program as follows:

  24.  Assist the Superintendent in the recruitment, screening and selection of prospective   

        employees.

  25.  Supervise the daily use of school facilities and grounds for academic and non- 

         academic purposes

  26.  Plan and supervise fire drills and the emergency preparedness plan. 

  27.  Provide for the inventory of materials and equipment under his/her care. 

  28.  Perform such other duties as the Superintendent or Board may determine.

  29.  As a representative of the school district, s/he is expected to deal with the public in a courteous and professional                     manner.

Qualifications

   *Specific training or job experience required before appointment.

             Must meet those qualifications required by Minnesota Statutes.  Must meet such academic, professional and personal qualifications as the Board may specify.
